What is Agricultural and Food Engineering?

Agriculture is the root of our livelihood as the cultivation of soil not only results in the yielding of crops, it provides food to the animals also. Under the program, the students would get to study as to how to develop technology that could be effectively used in the sphere of land resource planning, crop production, irrigation, dairy engineering. Meanwhile, the food engineers would be engaged in production, processing, packaging, safety and/or transportation of the world’s food supply. They would also get an opportunity to study about food refrigeration, freezing, thermal processing, drying, and other food operations

Scope of Agricultural and Food Engineering?

  • The demand for agricultural and food engineers is expected to grow at the rate of 4% from 2014 to 2024. The need to protect our environment, combat climate change, and global warming, increase agriculture production will surely go a long way in absorbing this new workforce. 
  • The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has planned to set up ten more Central Institute of Agricultural Engineering (CIAE) with an aim to expedite the level of pre and post-agricultural mechanization. 
  • The agricultural sector plays a vital role in the economic growth of our country. In this light, the job of an agricultural engineer is to enhance agricultural production by means of better engineering technologies, equipments, methods and inventions. Due to the global trend towards standardization of all agricultural products and equipment, there has been an upsurge in the demand of such professionals. The five main branches of Agricultural engineering are farm equipments, rural structures, soil conservation, drainage, and irrigation and rural electricity.
